Using arm signals has been downgraded in recent years. Here are a few reasons to consider them.

Using arm signals

The advantages of arm signals:

  • free from mechanical failure
  • cannot be accidentally left on
  • attract attention because they break the outline of bike and rider
  • can be seen from the front of the bike when used for slowing-down signals
  • are clearly distinguishable in bright sunlight
  • can be used to confirm the rider’s intention

Common situations were arm signals could be useful to reinforce another signal are:

  • to reinforce a left-hand turn indicator in an unclear situation
  • to reinforce brake lights on the approach to a pedestrian crossing

Do not use arm signals when you need both hands on the handlebars to control the bike, such as during heavy braking at speed or sharp cornering.
