Using arm signals has been downgraded in recent years. Here are a few reasons to consider them.
Using arm signals
The advantages of arm signals:
- free from mechanical failure
- cannot be accidentally left on
- attract attention because they break the outline of bike and rider
- can be seen from the front of the bike when used for slowing-down signals
- are clearly distinguishable in bright sunlight
- can be used to confirm the rider’s intention
Common situations were arm signals could be useful to reinforce another signal are:
- to reinforce a left-hand turn indicator in an unclear situation
- to reinforce brake lights on the approach to a pedestrian crossing
Do not use arm signals when you need both hands on the handlebars to control the bike, such as during heavy braking at speed or sharp cornering.
