Developing your skill at using signals
Using signals may seem to be a basic skill, but many riders do not use their signals consistently and do not know how to make the most effective use of the full range of signals available.
Skill in using your signals is an important element in applying the system of motorcycle control. Signaling is one of the key ways in which we give information to other road users.
Purpose of signals
To inform other road users of your presence and intentions.
Signals are used to give information, so they must be given clearly, in good time and in accordance with the vehicle code.
As with any communication, signals can easily be misinterpreted. Always make the meaning of your signals clear.
These are the key points to remember:
- consider the need to give a signal on the approach to every hazard and before you change direction or speed
- give a signal whenever it could benefit other road users
- remember that signaling does not give you any right to carry out the actions you indicate
- follow vehicle code – carry out rear observation before you signal or maneuver
Avoid confusion
For example, does a vehicle flashing the left-turn indicator mean that the driver intends to:
- park the vehicle, possible immediately after a left-turn intersection?
- turn into a left-turn intersection or driveway?
- continue straight on, having forgotten to cancel the last signal?
In practice you should use the position and speed of the vehicle to interpret the intentions of the driver.
You should not trust the signals of other road users but wait for some other confirmation of their intentions.
